Athenian Candle Co.
The Athenian Candle Co. has been a mainstay in Chicago’s Greek Town community for over 90 years. Founded by Themistocles and Efthimia Godelas in 1920, this three generation, family owned business was originally located in the Greek Town “Delta District” of Halsted, Harrison and Blue Island Avenues. It is the only original GreekTown business still in existence.
The Paspalas Family continues the tradition of making candles the old-fashioned way. Thousands of hand-dipped paraffin and beeswax candles of all sizes and dimensions are manufactured and sold each year to churches of all denominations worldwide. We carry a large inventory of candle products, suitable for churches, the home, and special events.
We import many ethnic and religious items directly from Greece. You will also find unique souvenirs and hard to find gifts from the homeland. In celebration of the sacraments and ceremonies of Greek American life, we supply icons (eikones), wedding crowns (stefana) and cases (stefanothikes), Jordan almonds (koufeta), baptismal items, crosses, oil lamps (kandilia), cemetery lamps and burners, incense, censors (livanistiria), and more. We also carry items catering to diverse religious and spiritual faiths, including prayer cards, crucifixes, candle holders, essential oils, books and statues.
Old world meets new world. Stop in to experience this one-of-a kind store. “Sas Perimenome!”
