Eros: A Tribute to Greek Love Poetry from Sappho to the Present

The Consulate General of Greece in Chicago will mark International Greek Language Day with a special cultural event dedicated to one of the most enduring themes in Greek literature: love.

Titled “Eros: A Tribute to Greek Love Poetry from Sappho to the Present,” the program will take place on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago.

Organized in collaboration with the National Hellenic Museum, the Center for Hellenic Studies at the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, and the Enosis Federation of Illinois, the event highlights the Greek language as a living vessel of emotion, memory, and poetic expression across centuries.

The program will trace Greek love poetry from antiquity to modern times, beginning with Sappho, whose fragmentary verses remain among the most intimate and influential expressions of desire in world literature. One of her most quoted lines, «ὄττω τις ἔραται» (“whatever one loves”), captures the evening’s central idea: love as both personal experience and cultural inheritance.

The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required and can be completed online through Eventbrite.
