Karavakia

In Greece, there is an old Christmas tradition of decorating karavakia (meaning little boats) with paint, lights, and other materials. The Greektown Arts Committee brings this unique tradition to life in Chicago’s Greektown by having local artists decorate 30+ little boats to be displayed in Greektown Neighborhood businesses throughout the holiday season. So come out and see these beautiful boats!

The Greeks have always had a deep connection with the sea. It’s been a long-standing tradition to paint little boats to honor the thousands of sailors who set sea on the coast of Greece and wish them a safe return.
